The reader only sees the three other women characters’ points of view in two or three chapters each. Of the four major women characters, only one, Sandy DuBois, the oldest, becomes a mother, but Smith de-emphasizes Sandy’s maternal role and instead focuses on her sexuality, maintaining the bifurcation between sexuality and maternity.
As they leave the club, Brooke again attempts to exercise her voice and be heard when she sees Diana and tells her former roommate about her pregnancy. Diana’s response, “Can’t hear you” (186), serves as a ﬁnal denial and muzzle for the open expression of Brooke’s feelings. With her menses, the feasibility of pregnancy vanishes, but Brooke’s inability to convey this vital information, at such a crucial time, signals the beginning of the demise of Brooke and Bentley’s relationship. Smith seems to suggest that open acknowledgment of Brooke’s possible pregnancy by both Bentley and Brooke would have provided hope for a permanent connection between the couple, a connection where divine sexuality and motherhood could be coexistent and complementary.
